At Tobacco Quitter we HATE New Year’s Resolutions AND we LOVE them. This post is about the internal yin and yang conflict which we have as tobacco treatment specialists - hate and love - yin and yang.
And yes if you are wondering, we ARE going to challenge you to prove us wrong this year. So get ready to lay the smack-down on us! We’re even going to encourage you to come back and tell the whole world how wrong we were in the comments below. Get your typing fingers ready.
We’re just being honest when we say your New Year's resolution to quit smoking is probably not going to work. We will start with these 5 reasons why.
New Year’s Resolutions of any type rarely work.
Let’s face it, most people don’t keep their New Year's resolutions. Those that do are the exception not the rule. We have dozens of scientific articles proving it, but we won’t bore you with them here. You already know this.
It’s not just that “New Year's resolutions to Quit Smoking” don’t work. It’s that “all” (okay most) New Year's resolutions don’t work. Our office is right by a gym. For the past 20 years, we’ve seen the same thing happen. In January you can’t find any empty piece of equipment; by February it’s crickets. Change is hard.
A New Year's resolution is not a plan.
It’s an end point, an intention, a goal. And yes, as tobacco treatment counselors we do LOVE it when smokers set quit smoking resolutions (the yin). We HATE it when they don’t have a plan that is going to work (the yang). Most New Year's resolutions skip the plan part.
Smokers don’t get professional quitting advice.
Nicotine is one of the most addictive drugs on the planet. Which makes cigarettes (and vapes) some of the most addictive things on the planet. You would think that most people would seek advice of professionals when faced with that. Sadly most don’t and their New Year's resolution to quit smoking goes up in smoke (or vape aerosol).
Smokers don’t have access to professional quitting counselors.
Don’t get us started on this one. We might go on a 20 minute rant (maybe even with an expletive or two). Don’t take our word for it either. Do our little Tobacco Quitter experiment as proof.
Call your doctor and ask him/her for a recommendation for a physical therapist. We bet she/he can give you a list of 5-10 CLINICS around you. Then ask them for a referral to a tobacco treatment specialist, or anyone who specializes in smoking cessation. Let us know what your doctor says by posting it in the comments below.

Smokers don’t set realistic quit dates (if the only day they focus on is January 1st).
This has probably killed more New Years Quit Smoking Resolutions than any of the above. Is waking up after partying until the ball drops really the best day to quit? Is having a hangover really conducive to helping you quit smoking? What is so sacred about January 1st? Often setting an unrealistic quit date, coupled to smoking even one cigarette on that unrealistic quit date equals months, years, or a lifetime of continued smoking.
So there you have it - 5 Reasons Why Your New Year’s Resolution to Quit Smoking could fail.

Now that you know these things, do something about them. Re-read the 5 points above and figure a way to resolve them, so that setting a New Year's resolution to quit smoking this year has some chance of succeeding.
